COL Richard VanderMeer arrived at Howe in the fall of 1988 as SAI (Senior Army Instructor) and was later named Assistant Superintendent; Acting Superintendent while COL Merritt was incapacitated two months in the Fall of 1991. Both COL Tom Merritt ’53 and COL Richard VanderMeer wore different lapel insignias on their uniforms than the Infantry crossed rifles worn by most staff, faculty, and cadet officers.

an Honorary Alumnus in 1992. The crossed sabers date to the 1851 Cavalry officer insignia.
